The Northern Brainwave Appeal has raised over £2,000,000 since 1988. Those funds have been spent on modernising monitoring, operating theatre and neuroradiology equipment to improve the treatment, care and safety of all neurosurgical patients.
The original monitors used in the Regional Neurosciences Centre at Newcastle General Hospital have been replaced in the Neurosciences Directorate’s new base at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. More new monitors are required.
Other purchases include equipment for ventilation and maintenance of oxygen requirements.
The Northern Brainwave Appeal bought computers which record and analyse data for research and funded the provision of a CT scanner and assisted with funds to provide the new Neuro-MRI Unit at the RVI.
Additional sophisticated monitoring equipment is required to detect the earliest signs of impending brain dysfunction in Critical Care environments and in the Operating Theatres and Interventional Neuroradiology Suites.
